Explore Rome on this special itinerary which has been designed by Nirvana Romell and focuses on the art and life of Caravaggio. The visit offers a wonderful opportunity to better understand not just the great master, but also the city and environment in which he flourished, at the time when Renaissance harmony and Mannerist chaos gave way to Baroque drama. Born in Milan in 1571, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio arrived in Rome as a trained painter in the 1590s. In the aftermath of the Italian Wars and Reformation, Rome was emerging as the new cultural hub of Italy. Great infrastructure and architectural projects were underway, initiated by Popes and Church officials, and their powerful families. The city offered stark contrasts: artistic and religious grandeur alongside extreme poverty, frequent violence, and medieval living conditions. This atmosphere of artistic innovation and social complexity provided a unique context for Caravaggio’s groundbreaking work. He often depicted the struggles and emotions of everyday people – among the first artists to do so in Western art – and used Rome’s multifaceted environment as a rich backdrop for his dramatic and realistic paintings.
Meet the humble people of Caravaggio’s Rome in his masterpieces in the church chapels and museums. In the resplendent interiors of baroque palazzos of the Galleria Borghese, Doria Pamphilj and Barberini, glimpse the high life as it was in Caravaggio’s time, and follow his artistic development, from his early naturalism and attention to technique and detail, to the later preoccupation with emotional immediacy and psychology of the scene. Explore the broader context of religious painting in the Vatican Museums’ Pinacoteca, setting Caravaggio’s ‘Entombment of Christ’ among works by Raphael, Leonardo and later Baroque masters. Admire Michelangelo’s work in the Sistine Chapel, one of the supreme achievements of Western art and inspiration to the armies of artists, including Caravaggio. Discover different, contrasting aspects of Baroque in juxtapositions of Caravaggio and his contemporary rival, Annibale Caracci, and in visits to two architectural gems: Borromini’s San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, and Bernini’s Sant’ Andrea in Quirinale – both showing different ways in which Baroque art transformed space as powerfully as painting transformed themes and narrative.

Nirvana has been lecturing on the social history of Western art for 25 years and has presented numerous lectures to the Friends of the Whitworth. She has also worked on collection interpretations and museum staff training. Her passion is cultural travel and she has created many unique cultural tours in the Balkans, northern Italy, France, Sweden and South Africa. In her work, she links the past with the present by combining aesthetic, historical and social theoretical approaches to art and culture. Those who travelled with Nirvana have particularly praised her ability to engage the audience and use her solid grasp of the subject matter to impart a lasting understanding of the artists, artefacts and their broader context.
