Provence, from the Roman Provincia, owes its distinctive charms to its clear light, brilliant sun and enchanting landscapes of sculpted hills, purple mountains, cypresses and lavender. The Romans colonized the region and luxuriated in its beauty, leaving behind some of the best examples of their engineering and architectural mastery. Even the medieval Popes and cardinals in Avignon succumbed to the richness of the its worldly temptations, not least its superb wines and heady scents of roses and violet. Their court’s painters, among the greatest in the 14th century, painted Madonnas in luminous Mediterranean colours that would one day inspire Post-Impressionists to challenge the way our eyes see not only this spectacular region but also the rest of the world. Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne, Matisse and their followers recreated Provencal landscapes in their paintings with a passionate and lyrical intensity, painting them almost as if they were moving and alive. This itinerary has been specially crafted with Nirvana to give the party a real understanding of the region’s millennia of history and culture and its role in some of Europe’s most important art movements.
